Kisspeptin-10 is one of the most important research peptides in modern reproductive neuroendocrinology. It is the core signalling molecule upstream of GnRH release from hypothalamic neurons, and it has redefined the field’s understanding of how the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is initiated and controlled.
What is Kisspeptin-10?
Kisspeptin-10 (KP-10) is a 10 amino acid C-terminal fragment of the full kisspeptin protein (a product of the KISS1 gene). It is the active fragment that binds and activates GPR54 (also called KISS1R), a G-protein coupled receptor expressed on GnRH neurons and other hypothalamic populations.
- Sequence: Tyr-Asn-Trp-Asn-Ser-Phe-Gly-Leu-Arg-Phe-NH₂
- Amino acids: 10
- Receptor: GPR54 (KISS1R)
- Upstream of: GnRH release from hypothalamic GnRH neurons
Research applications
- HPG-axis pulse-generator biology . Kisspeptin/neurokinin B/dynorphin (KNDy) neuron function
- Reproductive neuroendocrinology — puberty onset, seasonal reproduction, ovulation research
- LH pulse studies — Kisspeptin-10 administration drives LH surge in preclinical models
- Reproductive endocrine disorder research and hypothalamic amenorrhoea, PCOS, GnRH deficiency models
- Anovulation research kisspeptin as an ovulation trigger in research protocols
- Comparative studies with GnRH agonists (Gonadorelin, Triptorelin) and antagonists
Kisspeptin-10 vs GnRH analogues in research
The critical mechanistic distinction:
- Gonadorelin, Triptorelin , GnRH analogues that engage the GnRH receptor at the pituitary directly
- Kisspeptin-10 — engages GPR54 on hypothalamic GnRH neurons, causing them to release endogenous GnRH
This upstream vs downstream engagement makes Kisspeptin-10 a distinct research tool for studying central control of reproduction.
Reconstitution reference
Kisspeptin-10 reconstitutes with bacteriostatic water using the standard technique and see our reconstitution guide. Reconstituted Kisspeptin-10 is stable at 2–8 °C for approximately 3–4 weeks.
Regulatory context
Kisspeptin-10 isn’t approved as a medicinal product in Ireland. Supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research , with see our HPRA guide.
