Post-Brexit, UK-to-Ireland peptide shipments cross a customs border. Buyer risk depends heavily on how the shipment is declared. This guide sets out what compliant research chemical customs handling looks like.
Post-Brexit reality for peptide shipments
Since 1 January 2021, Great Britain is outside the EU customs union. That means:
- Shipments from GB to Ireland cross a customs border
- Customs declaration is required with commodity code and value
- Import VAT (23% in Ireland for standard rated goods) may apply above the €150 threshold for consumer imports
- Standard transit time: 2-3 working days including customs; occasional holds add 1-2 days
How research chemicals should be declared
Compliant declaration for research peptides:
- Commodity code , the correct HS code for the compound class
- Description , “Research chemical for in-vitro laboratory use” (not “cosmetic”, “food supplement” or “medicine”)
- Value , accurate transaction value
- Intended use : research-only stated on shipping documentation
Why misdeclaration matters
Suppliers who misdeclare research chemicals as cosmetics, food supplements or other categories to speed customs clearance transfer compliance risk to the buyer. If customs opens a parcel and finds research chemicals declared as cosmetics, the buyer inherits the misdeclaration problem , potentially with Revenue Commissioners follow-up.
Ask any Irish research peptide supplier: how do you declare the goods at customs? The right answer is: as research chemicals for in-vitro use.
EU fulfilment vs UK fulfilment
Some suppliers ship from EU fulfilment centres rather than the UK, which eliminates the customs border for Ireland-facing orders. Peptides Lab Ireland dispatches from EU fulfilment where possible, keeping the transit inside the EU customs union.
What VAT applies?
For research chemical shipments to Ireland:
- Consumer imports over €150 attract import VAT (23% standard rate)
- Business imports (with valid VAT number) can typically zero-rate on import for VAT-registered institutional buyers
- Institutional accounts using PO invoicing typically handle VAT at invoice level rather than at customs
Irish institutional customers should verify VAT handling with their procurement office before ordering.

Everything on this page is written for the research audience. Peptides Lab Ireland supplies research-grade material for in-vitro laboratory research only. It’s not a medicinal product, and it’s not for human or veterinary use. The HPRA regulates medicines in Ireland; research chemicals supplied for in-vitro use are outside that regime, which is exactly where we operate.
